Building Resilience During COVID-19

The ability to be able to recover during a national crisis is vital to the longevity of a business. The construction industry has not been immune to changes during the time of COVID-19. We have had some losses and we have had some major wins as well.

At Ascension General Contractors, we’ve changed our approach, our ideas, and our processes, all in efforts to win in the market during the COVID-19 pandemic. Here are a few specific areas the construction industry has had to adapt to build resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic.

How Have We Built Resilience During Covid-19?

Flexibility

Being able to be flexible with homeowners and business owners is a must in the construction industry. But, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the ever-changing environments, the need for this has increased. From practicing social distancing on projects to enhancing safety guidelines, those in the construction industry have had to adapt every work practice to create a safer environment.

Empathy & Communication

The virus has led to changes and disruptions in nearly every aspect of daily life. With that, practicing empathy during this time is essential, including in the construction industry. The pandemic has led to the need for not only increased empathy with homeowners and business owners but for employees as well. Also, those in the construction industry have had to find ways to adapt their communication to ensure their clients feel safe. Many businesses have adapted to new technology during this time, all while continuing to keep business operations running smoothly.

Construction Schedules

Due to constant changes of guidelines during the COVID-19 pandemic, it is likely that projects may take longer to complete. Those in the construction industry have had to become aware of this and adapt by considering time constraints when bidding out new jobs. This ensures that the contract reflects a reasonable schedule. It’s helpful for everyone involved in the project, including homeowners and business owners, to understand that projects might take longer than before and ensure everyone’s expectations are met.

Teamwork

One of the key factors to a business being able to recover during a national crisis is the ability to hire people in the right position. There’s nothing like trying to put a round peg in a square hole. Finding the people that fit your culture and drive your business is a “must-do” with ever-changing environments.
