Increase Your Home Storage With These Renovation Projects

One of the most common reasons why people decide to renovate their home is due to space constraints: they want more storage space. Adding extra space to your home without adding square footage might not seem possible, but if you have a careful analysis done of the space you already own and build a plan to make use of every square foot of that space, you will be able to find places for storage in some spots that may surprise you.

Here are a few ways to increase your home storage during renovation:

  • Wasted space. In many homes, large amounts of space that could be used for storage go unused, like that spot under the stairs. Rather than closing it off, why not create a unique storage area? If it’s large enough, you may be able to turn it into a full closet, complete with hanging hooks, shelving, and spots for cleaning tools like brooms and mops. Another possibility is to install pull-out shelves or drawers for the area under the lower steps; a perfect spot for little-used items. Use everyday items for other hideaway storage options. A mirror that doubles as a cabinet door, for example, can be a great space saving option.
  • Built-in space. During your planning stage, add built-in storage to your design. Cabinets that are designed to fit into a specific room can be a great organizational factor, eliminating the need for dressers, armoires, and entertainment centers—all of which take up tremendous amounts of space. Building a floor-to-ceiling bookcase with drawers and cubby holes can be the perfect spot to store all your books, of course, but it can also be a display case for your knick-knacks, your movie collection, or your beloved orchids. Built-in storage in your hallways can add tons of space for blankets, seasonal clothing, decorations, and much more. These are just two examples of what you can do with customized storage.
  • Closet space. Closet storage can get as complex as you like and can be planned to serve your every storage need. Shoe racks, drawers, shelving, and layered hanging areas can be a dream come true. You may even be able to add seating! Adding a fold-out table is a great addition to your closet that will give you a place to fold clothes, and by adding a bank of drawers here, you can create even more storage space.

Whether you choose storage space that is built-in, hidden away, or just part of the furniture, your home renovation is a great opportunity to find creative solutions to your space challenges.
