If you’ve been planning on remodeling or renovating and are finally ready to start the project, most likely you’ll need to hire a general contractor. But finding the right one for your specific project can be a little overwhelming when it comes to knowing where to start.
That’s why today at Ascension General Contractors, we are giving you some tips so you’ll know exactly how to choose the right contractor for the job.
Do Some Research
The first step to choosing a contractor starts with doing some research. Not only does the internet provide you with access to all kinds of resources on the general contractors in your area, but asking your friends and family members for recommendations is another great way to find a reputable contractor. Wherever you may be gathering your information from, it is always a good idea to write out some questions that you would like answered. Ask about the trustworthiness of the contractor, whether they communicate well, and if they are able to get the required permits for your project.
Make Some Phone Calls
Once you’ve done some research and looked at reviews, call a few different contractors and ask some general questions to get a better understanding of their company and the projects they do. Find out if they have done similar projects to yours in the past as well as if they have references, what they specialize in, and their licensing and insurance.
Once you’ve narrowed down your list to a few of the best contractors with a clean track record and good work ethic, it is time to reach out for a bid. To compare bids, ask everyone to break down the cost of materials, labor, profit margins, and other expenses. It is also a good idea to plan on paying 10-15% more than your contract states just in case of any unforeseen issues with the project. Be sure to ask about the plans that they have available and work out a payment schedule ahead of time.
Compare the Contractors
Once you have done your research, talked with the contractors, and received the bids, it’s time to decipher all of the information and choose a contractor! This is when it’s a good idea to make notes of what you liked and didn’t like about each bid and contractor. And always remember to trust your instincts and read the contract in full before you sign it to make sure you are completely aware of the process moving forward.
It takes a little bit of detective work to choose the right contractor, but doing so will help ensure you know what to expect and get the final product you have in mind.
