What to Know Before Hiring a Contractor

If you’ve been thinking about remodeling a room in your house or building that two-car garage you’ve always wanted, you may be wondering what you should do to turn this idea into a reality. But before hiring a contractor, there are a few things you should know. And here at Ascension General Contractors, we are sharing a few of those things with you today:

Your Goals

As the client, it’s important to think about your goals for the project. A contractor will work with you based on the plan you give them for the project, so you’ll want to make sure you are thorough before talking with a contractor. Think about what you want it to look like, any specific features you want, and collect pictures or create diagrams to share with your contractor so they have a clear understanding of what you want.

Research Local Contractors

There are different types of contractors out there, so you’ll want to be sure you are choosing the right contractor for your project specifically. Look for a contractor who has done projects similar to what you have in mind and check online reviews and references. You’ll also want to make sure you hire a licensed contractor. Professional contractors will be able to provide you with a copy of their license, proof of liability insurance, and workers’ compensation information. This will help you know exactly what is covered by the contractor’s insurance and what is covered by your homeowner’s insurance.

Determine the Payment Plan

When talking with a contractor, be sure to ask about any up-front payments and payment plans, so you understand exactly what you are paying for and how. And remember to always read the contract fully before you sign it to make sure you understand the details and that it is clear in outlining the project in full detail. Communicate Any Concerns You Have

The key to a smooth renovation project is clear communication between you and your contractor. Don’t be afraid to establish ground rules and communicate any concerns or issues you have. Establishing this early on will help both you and your contractor know what expectations you both have while the project is taking place.
