Should You Replace Your Shingles?

When it comes to home maintenance, it’s easy to overlook important elements of your home. And unfortunately, roofs are often high on the list of items neglected. In fact, most homeowners probably won’t think about repairing or getting a new roof until after they see a leak in their ceiling.

When it comes to knowing how to properly maintain your roof and whether you need new shingles or if a simple repair will do, there are a few things to consider. And here at Ascension General Contractors, we are giving you a few of those details to help you decide if you should replace your shingles.

Roof Age

Probably the biggest thing to consider when deciding if you need new shingles is the age of your existing roof. A typical roof should last between 20 and 25 years. But the lifespan of your roof also depends on how many layers of shingles are on your roof. Additionally, when exposed to harsher climates, shingles can have a shorter lifespan.

Signs of water damage or leaking

If your roof has started leaking or shows signs of water damage, getting it repaired or replaced should be a top priority. If left unresolved, it can lead to structural damage to your home.

Exposed Nails

Exposed nails can lead to issues with your roof. If you have a lot of nails that are exposed and have been for a while, you may need to replace your roof.

Cracked or Damaged Shingles

If your roof has shingles that are cracked or missing, they will have to be replaced, and the sooner you catch the issue the better. If you see curling shingles, it can mean your shingles weren’t installed correctly, are old, or can be a sign of a bigger issue like leaking.
