Property Damage Insurance Claims

In the unfortunate event that your property has been damaged, the last thing you want is to be stuck with a lot of questions and no answers about filing a claim with your insurance company. But here at Ascension General Contractors, we’re here to help! We’ve put together all of the things you need to know about damage insurance claims.

The Basics

A property damage claim is a report you submit to an insurance company when your property has been damaged. After your property has been damaged, it’s important to call your insurance company to first determine what damage is covered under your current policy, how long you have to file a claim, and how long it will take to process the claim. You’ll also want to find out about your deductible and how much you will have to pay out of pocket.

Processing a Claim

Once you submit the claim, an insurance adjuster will come to inspect your property and review the damage. The adjuster will also ask questions about the damage and condition the property was in before the damage. Taking photos and documenting any damage will definitely make things easier through this process and help to ensure you get a fair settlement by providing proof of the damage. Be sure you have plenty of evidence of the damage and bids ready from licensed contractors to make adjusting the claim faster and simpler.

Payment

After your claim is processed, you will receive the insurance payout. When both your home and its contents are damaged, you generally get two separate checks from your insurance company. With a mortgaged home, the check for home repairs will generally be made out to you and the mortgage lender. Some contractor companies, however, may want you to sign a direction to pay form that allows your insurance company to pay the contractor directly. If you have personal property coverage for your possessions inside of your home, keep in mind that you will most likely need to replace the damaged items before your insurance company will pay for any lost items.
